When our fearless Alpha, Gabriel, was killed in a battle with the Alpha of the pack that lived on the outskirts of the land we were thrown into the dark ages. The pack was known as the Zenuk Pack and was formed of banished wolves. Over the years of their banishment, they were rising up, training and breeding the strongest and the meanest wolves.
……2 Generations into the past…….
We had been warned by the highland pack that they were growing tougher. When some of our pack became paranoid, Gabriel told us that there was nothing to worry about; the outcasts were too young of a pack to be able to hold up against them. He was wise and led our pack into great posterity, so with that kind of record we believed him.
The next winter, I traveled to the other packs, still concerned with our welfare. Animals were found few and far between now and the others were growing restless, doubting Gabriel. There are four packs the highland pack, lowland pack, the inland pack and the outcasts. They weren’t really their own pack up until recently, but they were strays that had been outcast and shared each other’s company. I traveled that winter through the worst ice storm our generation had ever seen to arrive at an empty den in highland territory. What had become of them, I could not know. The den was long empty. I could not smell the familiar pup and elk scent that normally huddled in the toasty room. It just smelled of mildew and dirt. The storm grew had grown worse since I arrived and I waited it out there.
It was the dawn of spring before I could travel safely back home. When I arrived home, I was stunned to see that nearly half of the pack had died; most from starvation over the winter. I was close to it too. I had been lucky enough to find a dead deer close by. I told Gabriel of what I had found and he just brushed it away. He said that they had been weak and easy to give in; he was not surprised by the pack’s downfall. I rested up at home and this is when my grandmother, told me of a dream. She said that it was of the future. That someone would take over all the packs and force us to live as one, killing whoever disagreed. She said that it would last years, that my children’s children would be living in this time. She said that one would be born who could stand up and fight back for all of those who were too scared to. I believed her every word. So taking what she had told me I went to the Inland pack that summer. I told them of what had become of the highland pack. When I told their Alpha what I knew, he took me seriously and said they would take precautions so that they could end this thing. I was welcomed as a guest of the Inland pack for a week and then I went home. I felt better to know that someone was taking me seriously about this potential threat. I slept easy for the next week as fall started to come around. As I was just beginning to feel better the Inland’s beta showed up at our den. He was dripping blood and limping heavily. He told us about how the Zenuks came to their den and took over; their Alpha killed anyone who would not join them. He was the only one to escape and he barely made it out with his life. As the mate of the Lowland’s Beta it was my job to heal the Inland’s Beta. He was in terrible condition. I tried my best to lick the wounds clean. He had lost a lot of blood and his death was inevitable. He died that night and Gabriel finally believed that the Zenuks were strong enough to take over all our packs. He began to prep our pack, using small scuffles to hone our battle skills.
It was on an unexpected winter night that the Zenuk Pack attacked us. Their Alpha killed Gabriel in his sleep and many others. They spared every female in the pack, snapping at them only leaving small wounds. They took us and left every male that didn’t give in and take their ways for dead. The new bred of wolf was much stronger and nearly twice the size of a normal wolf. There were highly intelligent and more shades of color covered their fur. As those of us who could not defend ourselves against them traveled over the land to where they now resided we asked many questions to those who would answer. We discovered that not only had their size changed, so had many other things about them. They could see in color and they were much more intelligent than the average wolf. We asked what all the stuff around their necks and legs were, they said they were decorations and it helped to attract mates. It was one thing that had become very popular among their kind. Not all were terribly ruthless, they just looked the part.
As the years went by I had children and they had children and I had become an old woman while my grandchildren towered over me, with all of the new genetics in them. I had a dream just like my grandmothers used to be, I told my youngest granddaughter and she listened with all her little heart. I did not want to give up the idea that one day it will be as it used to be before the Royal Family. My heart beamed when she wagged her tail and told me how she would pass on my words to help lead us into a brighter future. I knew she would, she was bright for even past the normal of the new species. She had a strong heart and I knew she would be the key of the future’s happiness. It wasn’t long from that day that I left her world to look down on her from a better one and hope she would be able to rally enough believers to overcome the Royal Family and take the wolves back to a prosperous age.
